Rn Degree In order to qualify for applying for nurse practitioner degree accredited program you need to be a graduate in nursing. In other words, you should already possess a bsn degree in nursing. Certain np degrees allow students to gain entry as soon as they finish their associate or graduation degree, most require that students complete certain amount of time working as a nursing assistant or an rn, registered nurse before they can get admission to the course. Experience Needed Most of the existing nurse practitioner degree programs need the applying students to have atleast one year working in a clinic or hospital as an rn. Only then can they qualify for admission into the np program. Even during the np program and training, the students are needed to undergo clinical rotations in order to practice and apply skills learnt during the training. Thus, whether the student is specializing in dental, psychiatry, midwifery, acute care or any other niche segment, they need to implement whatever they have learnt. MDs and nurse educators supervise these clinical rotations. The Curriculum All nurse practitioner degree programs will reward the students with doctoral or masters degree. This is also called msn or masters of science in nursing. This all depends on the program requirements and the duration of training. Typically, master programs in np are completed within a span of two or three years. However, if you are undergoing a doctorate program, the training might continue for five years. The curriculum and coursework involved during the training of nps is nothing but an extension of whatever was learnt during the undergraduate or associate degree. However, the masters degree training will enable students to specialize in niche segments like pathology, dental, pharmacology, diagnosis, modalities of treatment and much more. Specialty Certification All nurse practitioners can either choose to operate as generalists and thus providing generic services as provided by primary care physicians or focus on specialty areas in medical care. In generic responsibilities the nurse practitioner degree will focus on ordering of diagnostic tests, writing of prescriptions, performing of small medical procedures etc. If an np wants to work in a particular nursing specialty, there are many professional organizations, which offer advanced education as well as certification programs in niche segments like acute care, pediatrics, women's health, mental health, cardiovascular care, orthopedics etc. Nps are also involved in the administrative tasks at medical centers like in billing, ordering of diagnostic tests etc. The specific responsibilities of nps differ across states within the US but the generic roles remain the same. |
